Research Departments
We foster collaborative research across space science and technology and across industry domains. Our research is focused into Research Departments. Each department operates as a hub for targeted research projects, where international students, researchers, and professionals collaborate to pioneer the future of the space industry.
Space Power and Energy
Focuses on the generation, storage, and transmission of energy in deep space environments. Projects explore topics such as solar-power satellites to wireless power transmission to sustainable habitat energy infrastructure.
Space Policy and Law
Focuses on geopolitical issues such as international treaties, property rights, and resource extraction policies. Research aims to produce frameworks guiding the ethical and peaceful use of space for commerce, habitation, exploration, and beyond.
Space Medicine and Biology
Investigates topics such as the physiological impacts of microgravity and radiation on the human body and the in-space cultivation of organic matter and medicines.
In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing
Investigates topics involving in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM). Projects explore issues such as the hardware and logistics required for building complex structures outside atmospheric limitations.
Space for Earth
Focuses on the applications of space for the benefit of Earth. Projects explore topics such as Earth imaging, space-to-Earth power transfer, and orbital data centers.
Space Commerce
Investigates topics involving the commercial use of outer space. Projects explore issues such as sustained space economies, in-space services, and resource harvesting.
Space Exploration and Settlement
Focuses on topics related to the exploration and settlement of outer space. Projects explore issues such as spaceflight, space stations, space observation, and space habitation.
Small Satellites
Focuses on topics related to small satellites, such as CubeSats and other nanosatellites. Projects explore issues such as how CubeSats can be used for novel experimentation and commercial purposes.
Space AI and Cybersecurity
Investigates the use of AI and cybersecurity in the space industry. Projects explore issues such as orbital data centers, AI satellite integration, and satellite signal protection.
Space Safety and Sustainability
Investigates how the use of space can be kept safe and sustainable. Projects explore issues such as orbital debris, human health, and atmospheric reentry.
Human Factors and Culture
Focuses on topics related to society, culture, psychology, and other considerations for humans in space. Projects explore issues such as societal structure of space colonies, education and training programs in preparation for space colonization, and how to impose work limits for psychological health.
Special Projects
For everything that doesn't fit elsewhere.
